In Japan, preparing matcha is not just a process but a refined ritual, preserved by tea ceremony schools such as Urasenke. There are two basic ways to prepare it:
The most common style, using about 1.5–2 g of powder per 70–80 ml of water. The result is a gentle, lightly frothy drink.
A more ceremonial version with 3.5–4 g of matcha per 30–50 ml of water. The drink is thick, intense and without foam, as it is prepared slowly and deliberately.
These ratios come from traditional Japanese practice and balance flavour, texture and visual experience.
The amount of matcha affects its strength and mouthfeel:
For a milder taste you can also use about 1 g per 100 ml of water – a great choice for beginners.
Before preparing, sift the matcha through a fine sieve. This will:
Add water heated to about 70 °C (never above 80 °C). Water that is too hot can make it bitter and astringent. You can also prepare matcha with cold water for a more refreshing version.
Use a bamboo whisk – a chasen. For usucha, whisk quickly (in an M or W motion) until a fine foam forms. For koicha, stir slowly and gently, almost like mixing a thick cream – the goal is a smooth, silky texture without foam.
The drink is ready when it is completely smooth. Traditionally matcha is drunk straight from the bowl, but you can also use it in modern drinks and dishes:
Preparing matcha combines quality ingredients, the right ratio, temperature and technique. When you follow these basics, you create a drink that is balanced in both flavour and texture.
But the most important part is the moment you take for yourself. Matcha is not just a drink – it is an invitation to slow down, be mindful and enjoy the small details.
